A verified research pass across eleven Greek businesses shows carob is overwhelmingly a Cretan production story with a mainland retail tail: seven of nine sellers are based in Crete, while Athens and Thessaloniki appear only as resellers. Packaged products dominate, with only two confirmed cases of carob served as a dish nationally.
Carob is the edible pod of the carob tree (Ceratonia siliqua), widely cultivated around the Mediterranean including Crete and Cyprus. Naturally sweet and caffeine-free, it is dried and ground into carob flour or syrup, often used as a substitute for cocoa or sugar in sweets and baked goods.
